We live in a world where everything is in motion, or so it seems. But not everything is moving the same way. Some things move from one place to another, others go around and around and some things are stationary. For the past two weeks, the students have been building spinners to test how and why they spin. This week in science, we continued our unit on balance. Our focus question this week was, How can counterweights help us balance other shapes? In order to answer that question, we balanced geometric tagboard shapes in a variety of ways on the end of craft sticks. We used clothespins as counterweights. We tried to find as many ways as possible to establish stable positions. Below are some pictures from our investigation:

In science, we have been geologists. Geologists are scientists who study the Earth's surface. As geologists, we have been learning about rocks. We learned about three different types of rocks: tuff, scoria, and basalt. After learning about different types of rocks, we talked about how rocks can be sorted by different sizes, shapes, and colors. Below, are pictures from our sorting activity.
